Curriculum
The Melinda Webb School curriculum is individualized to meet the unique needs of each student. Teachers complete weekly individualized lesson plans with the goals and activities for each student to take home for their parents to implement at home.
The Melinda Webb School teachers provide language instruction through structured and unstructured activities throughout the day. Each day, students in full-day programs receive language instruction specific to their needs in small groups. Teachers set short-term and long-term goals based on each student’s receptive and expressive language skills. The CASLLS (Cottage Acquisition Scales for Listening, Language, & Speech) system is used to track and monitor student progress, and to set goals for their receptive and expressive language skills.
Vocabulary instruction for students is embedded into daily routines, unstructured activities, and small group structured activities. The Moog 100-, 150-, and 300-word lists are used to track and set goals for receptive and expressive vocabulary skills.
All Melinda Webb School students receive standardized vocabulary assessments to monitor vocabulary growth and progress.
The Melinda Webb School teachers use their specialized background to embed auditory skills into routine activities throughout the day. Teachers also use the CID SPICE Curriculum (Speech Perception Instructional Curriculum and Evaluation) to evaluate student's present levels, to plan for auditory instruction and to measure and record student progress.
The Melinda Webb School academic and developmental curriculum is aligned with Texas state standards for students from 18 months old to kindergarten age.
Students undergo a yearly standardized developmental assessment on the DAYC-2 (Developmental Assessment of Young Children, Second Edition). This assessment provides standard scores in the areas of fine motor, gross motor, cognition, social-emotional, and adaptive behavior.
Reading to students is essential to the development of listening and spoken language and early literacy skills. At the Melinda Webb School, literacy and phonological awareness activities are a part of daily instruction in all grade levels. Our kindergarten program uses a balanced literacy approach to teach reading and writing skills.
