Did you know noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is impacting more and more young adults, despite being completely preventable? Let’s learn more about it!
What exactly is noise-induced hearing loss?
Noise-Induced hearing loss happens when you are exposed to loud sounds over time. This continued exposure can damage the tiny hair cells in your ears that help you hear. According to the CDC, between 10 and 40 million adults under 70 years old have some level of noise-induced hearing loss.
Why are young adults at higher risk?
Many young adults listen to loud music through personal earbuds, go to concerts or work in noisy environments such as warehouses, factories or the military. The sounds we enjoy can sometimes be too loud, and our ears can’t handle it without sustaining damage. When we don’t protect our hearing, we risk losing it for good.
How can you prevent noise-induced hearing loss?
Here are some simple tips to help you protect your hearing:
- Lower the Volume. When using earbuds or headphones, keep the volume at 60% or lower. If others can hear your music outside your headphones, it’s too loud.
- Use Hearing Protection. If you’re going to a concert or a noisy event, wear earplugs or another form of hearing protection. They help reduce the volume without losing sound quality. If you are around loud noises often for work or hobbies, consider getting custom hearing protection made with our audiology team for better protection.
- Limit Time in Noisy Environments. Try to spend less time in places with loud sounds when possible. While at noisy events, consider taking frequent breaks from the noise to give your ears a rest.
- Follow the 60/60 Rule. Listen to music at 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes a day. This helps prevent overexposure to loud sounds.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings. If you find yourself in a loud environment, move away from the noise or cover your ears if you can.
Noise-induced hearing loss is becoming common among young adults, but we can change the story. By following these simple tips, you can enjoy your favorite music and activities while keeping your ears safe. If you have any concerns about your hearing, don’t hesitate to reach out to an audiologist for help. Remember: protecting your hearing now will help you enjoy your favorite sounds throughout your life!
