Every year, Texas Hearing Institute’s Melinda Webb School participates in the Hearing Loss Association of America’s (HLAA) Walk4Hearing event. It is a nationwide campaign that raises awareness and brings hope to people with hearing loss in 21 cities across the United States. Texas Hearing Institute is an official partner with Walk4Hearing, which means we receive 40% of the funds raised under our team. All funds directly benefit the Melinda Webb School to pay for classroom supplies, activities, and enrichment for our students throughout the year. Last year, we raised almost $10,000! And this year’s goal is to match or exceed that amount.
The purpose of the Walk4Hearing is to bring awareness and encouragement to families that are dealing with or know someone with hearing loss. Currently, one in seven Americans is impacted by some level of hearing loss, and one billion young people are at risk for noise-induced hearing loss. This number is expected to double by 2050. Our hearing health is an often-ignored part of our overall health, and HLAA and Texas Hearing Institute are working hard to ensure families receive the help and tools they need to reach their full potential. We need your help to bring awareness to the importance of better hearing health and increase access to hearing care to families and communities of all backgrounds.
The Walk4Hearing also helps bring teams of family and friends together to provide necessary information and resources. This provides a growing community to turn to when facing the challenges of hearing loss. This year’s walk takes place on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the University of Houston’s The Grove. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. and the walk starts at 10:15 a.m.
