Don’t let summer pass you by! Texas Hearing Institute has a wide array of services to help protect your hearing health all summer long.
Swimming
Children often complain about their ears hurting after a day in the water. This is true for both children with and without hearing loss. One possibility is that kids are more sensitive to untreated water (such as in lakes or the ocean) and require swim plugs to make the most out of their water play days. Other times, water simply gets trapped in the ear canal and causes irritation. This can result in a fungal infection developing causing pain, swelling, and discomfort, known as otitis externa or, more commonly, “swimmer’s ear.” Children with a pressure equalization (PE) tube in the eardrum may also develop drainage from an ear infection because of water entering the middle ear space through the PE tube. To ensure every child has a fun summer, families can make an appointment with Texas Hearing Institute’s Audiology Department to order custom swim plugs for the swim season! These Aqua-Seal plugs come in a variety of color choices with a convenient carrying case and a vinyl cord. Custom swim plugs are $85 per ear.

Concerts
Concerts are a great part of summer fun, but keeping your hearing protected is also very important. Did you know that the noise levels at a concert reach levels above 120 decibels (dB)? This is the equivalent of the sound of an airplane taking off! At levels that high, only eight minutes of exposure can permanently damage your hearing. At Texas Hearing Institute, the Audiology Department offers a wide range of custom earplugs that would protect your ears–while still letting the wearer enjoy the experience of a concert. The cost of earplugs vary by color and style.
